Abstract
Ceramics constitute one of the most enduring material
technologies developed in the territory now known as Mexico. Their historical
trajectory is associated with technological adaptation, knowledge transmission,
cultural exchange, economic transformation, and the construction of social
meanings. Drawing on the exhibition Barro y cerámica en México: Poéticas de
lo utilitario (Clay and Ceramics in Mexico: Poetics of the Utilitarian),
presented by Banco Nacional de México through Patrimonio y Fomento Cultural
Banamex, this article examines the development of ceramic production from
Indigenous traditions to contemporary practices. Particular attention is given
to the interaction among pre-Columbian ceramic systems, New Spanish techniques,
transpacific circulation, European, Asian, and African influences,
industrialization, cultural nationalism, modern design, and experimentation
with high-temperature ceramics. The analysis suggests that the history of
Mexican ceramics cannot be understood as a linear succession of styles, but
rather as a process of continuity and transformation in which utilitarian
functions, production technologies, and symbolic values have evolved in
relation to one another. The persistence of the vessel as a formal structure
provides a particularly relevant example: despite technological and cultural
changes, the functions of containing, serving, storing, and transporting have
remained recurrent throughout different historical periods. From this
perspective, Mexican ceramics can be understood as a system of material
knowledge in which tradition, innovation, and social context remain closely
interconnected.

Part 1. Technological Continuity, Cultural
Exchange, and the Transformation of Ceramic Materiality
Introduction
Clay is one of the materials whose transformation has accompanied
human settlement and social development in the territory of present-day Mexico
for millennia. Its availability, plasticity, and capacity to acquire structural
stability through firing favored the production of vessels, tools, ritual
objects, and architectural components. Over time, accumulated knowledge
concerning clay selection, preparation, forming, drying, and firing generated
highly specialized technical systems.
The historical relevance of ceramics, however, extends
beyond their physical properties. Ceramic objects preserve evidence of social
organization, food practices, exchange networks, religious systems, and
economic transformations. A ceramic artifact can therefore be examined
simultaneously as a functional object, a technological product, a commodity, an
aesthetic expression, and a material record.
This condition complicates rigid distinctions between art,
craft, and design. Contemporary disciplinary categories do not necessarily
correspond to the circumstances in which historical objects were produced. A
vessel designed to store food or water could require considerable technical
expertise while also incorporating symbolic and aesthetic dimensions.
This perspective underlies Barro y cerámica en México:
Poéticas de lo utilitario, an exhibition comprising 690 pieces and
ensembles that examines ceramic production from pre-Columbian traditions to
contemporary practices. The exhibition brings together Indigenous and popular
production, industrial manufacturing, modern design, and contemporary ceramic
practices.
The present analysis examines the principal processes that
shaped this trajectory, focusing on three interconnected variables: technological
transformation, cultural circulation, and changes in the function of objects.
From this perspective, the history of Mexican ceramics emerges not as a linear
sequence of replacements but as a dynamic system in which new technologies
interact with established forms of knowledge.
Part 2. Ceramics as Cultural Technology
Ceramic production begins with a fundamental transformation:
converting a geological material into an object with substantially different
physical properties. Clay can be shaped while retaining sufficient moisture and
subsequently acquires greater stability through drying and firing.
Although apparently simple, this process involves multiple
variables. The mineralogical composition of a clay body influences plasticity
and thermal behavior; surface treatments affect absorption and appearance;
pigments and glazes introduce optical and functional properties; and firing
temperature and atmosphere determine chemical transformations that influence
the final structure.
Knowledge of these variables developed historically through
observation, experimentation, and transmission. Pottery should therefore also
be understood as a cultural technology: a body of practical knowledge that
communities preserve, modify, and transmit across generations.
The continuity of this knowledge is particularly evident in
the persistence of certain forms, most notably the vessel. Its basic structure
responds to a fundamental requirement: creating an enclosed space capable of
holding a substance. From this elementary function emerged containers for water
storage, food preparation, transportation, exchange, and ritual practices.
The persistence of the vessel does not imply formal
immobility. Its structure has provided a platform for experimentation with
proportions, surfaces, volumes, decorative systems, and firing technologies.
The combination of functional continuity and formal variability is one of the
characteristics that explains the longevity of ceramic production.
Part 3. Indigenous Traditions and the Circulation of Knowledge
Indigenous cultures developed diverse ceramic systems long
before the emergence of Mexico as a modern nation-state. These traditions
should be understood within regional networks of exchange, migration, and
technological transmission that extended beyond contemporary political borders.
Differences among communities were expressed not only
through decorative motifs but also through clay preparation, forming
techniques, kiln construction, surface treatment, and firing procedures. Such
practices responded to the availability of local raw materials and to the
specific requirements of each community.
The diversity of ceramic production across Mexico should
therefore not be interpreted simply as a collection of isolated styles. It
resulted from multiple processes of interaction. Some technical systems
persisted for long periods, while others were modified through population
movements, commercial exchanges, and the incorporation of new materials.
This dynamic character is essential when interpreting later
ceramic production. New Spanish ceramics did not emerge in a technologically
empty territory. European procedures encountered established Indigenous
knowledge systems, producing processes of adaptation and technical exchange.
Part 4. New Spain: Technology, Cultural Interaction, and Transpacific Trade
The establishment of Spanish colonial rule introduced
significant changes to ceramic production. Glazing techniques developed in the
Iberian Peninsula were incorporated into American territories and came into
contact with local practices.
The Andalusian tradition represents an important antecedent
to this process. The development of glazing technologies, together with
geometric, vegetal, and calligraphic decorative repertoires, formed part of a
technical history that was subsequently transmitted to the Americas under
Spanish rule.
In New Spain, these techniques contributed to the
development of maiolica and talavera. The resulting production was not simply
an exact reproduction of European models. Local raw materials, workshop
practices, technical expertise, and consumer demand altered the procedures and
visual repertoires.
A second source of transformation emerged through
transpacific commerce. From the sixteenth century onward, the Manila-Acapulco
Galleon established a regular connection between Asia and the Americas and
subsequently linked these markets to European commercial networks. Chinese
export porcelain had a significant influence on the tastes of New Spanish
consumers.
The significance of this process extends beyond the movement
of objects. Asian porcelain introduced new expectations concerning whiteness,
gloss, decoration, form, and material quality. Local producers responded by
adapting these references to existing technologies.
Ceramics thus became a particularly sensitive indicator of
early globalization. Objects provide evidence of the circulation of technical
knowledge and aesthetic preferences long before the emergence of contemporary
industrial systems.
Part 5. Tonalá and Guanajuato: Regional Adaptations of Ceramic Traditions
The production of Tonalá represents a significant case
because of the interaction among local traditions, external demand, and
technical innovation. During the New Spanish period, its ceramic production
acquired recognition for its formal and decorative qualities. Certain objects
incorporated Indigenous iconographic repertoires into forms intended for
colonial consumer networks.
This phenomenon demonstrates that ceramic production could
operate as a site of cultural negotiation. Images, techniques, and forms were
not necessarily confined to a single cultural system; they could circulate and
acquire new meanings.
Guanajuato provides another example of this interaction. At
the end of the eighteenth century, Miguel Hidalgo promoted manufacturing
activities that included ceramic production. His interest in improving product
quality and developing manufacturing procedures reflected Enlightenment ideas
concerning labor, production, and technical knowledge.
The participation of Indigenous artisans in drawing and
decorative processes adds another dimension to this history. Objects
manufactured for the colonial market incorporated elements from different
traditions, demonstrating how ceramic production could function simultaneously
as an economic activity and as a mechanism of cultural interaction.
Part 6. Industrialization and the Transformation of Material Culture
During the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Mexican
ceramics underwent a transformation associated with mechanization and the
expansion of consumer markets. The production of tableware and other ceramic
goods increasingly incorporated industrial procedures that altered both
production scale and labor organization.
Factories producing fine earthenware introduced machinery,
larger kilns, and specialized departments. The separation of activities such as
clay-body preparation, forming, firing, and decoration contributed to greater
standardization.
Companies such as El Ánfora and other manufacturers
consolidated a national industrial sector associated with tableware, sanitary
ware, and everyday objects. Ceramics acquired a significant position within
urban material culture.
Industrialization produced a complex transformation. It
increased the availability of ceramic goods and reduced dependence on
small-scale production, while also introducing standards of reproducibility
that changed the traditional relationship among object, maker, and user.
The tension between industrial repetition and artisanal
singularity would remain relevant throughout the twentieth century and become
one of the central issues in ceramic design.
Part 7. Nationalism, Tourism, and the Reinterpretation of Craft
Following the Mexican Revolution, Indigenous and popular
cultural expressions acquired an increasingly prominent position within
projects aimed at constructing a national identity. Exhibitions and collecting
practices contributed to a reassessment of objects that had previously been
regarded primarily as utilitarian products.
This process intensified between the 1930s and 1950s, when
tourism increasingly associated the Mexican experience with archaeology,
landscape, and handicrafts.
Oaxaca, Taxco, and Tonalá participated in this
transformation through different strategies. In Oaxaca, workshops incorporated
Zapotec motifs and archaeological references into objects intended for the
tourism market. In Taxco, the presence of designers and foreign artists
encouraged the integration of community-based techniques with modernist visual
languages.
Tonalá developed a particularly close relationship with the
U.S. market. The so-called “cerámica para gringos” illustrates how national
imagery could become a commercial product. Motifs, colors, and forms were
selected or modified to respond to foreign consumer expectations.
This phenomenon reveals a recurring characteristic of
material culture: tradition is not merely preserved; it is continuously
reconstructed under changing economic conditions.
Part 8. High-Temperature Ceramics and
Technological Change
The introduction of high-temperature ceramics during the
second half of the twentieth century represented one of the most significant
technical developments in modern Mexican ceramic production.
Stoneware altered firing conditions and created new
possibilities for clay bodies and glazes. In Tonalá, Ken Edwards and Jorge
Wilmot played significant roles in introducing and developing these approaches.
Edwards arrived in Mexico in 1955 and subsequently worked in
Tonalá, where he established relationships with local artisans. His production
combined high-temperature techniques with decorative resources associated with
regional ceramic traditions.
Jorge Wilmot, trained at the Academia de San Carlos and with
experience in European workshops, settled in Tonalá in 1959. His collaboration with
local artisans and subsequent research into glazes expanded the technical
possibilities of Mexican ceramics. His experimentation with techniques
associated with Japanese ceramics, including celadon, demonstrates the
continuing role of international exchange.
The significance of this innovation extends beyond the
temperatures reached in the kiln. Technological change altered the expressive
possibilities of ceramic objects and facilitated their circulation through new
cultural spaces, including galleries, museums, and design-oriented venues.
Ceramics consequently began to move from the sphere of
functional craft toward contemporary art and design.
Part 9. The Emergence of Ceramics as an Autonomous
Artistic Language
During the 1960s and 1970s, high-temperature ceramics
increasingly became a field for formal and conceptual experimentation. The Cono
10 group participated in this transformation through research focused on the
possibilities of stoneware.
The international development of the Studio Craft Movement
in the United States provided a broader context for this shift. Ceramics began
to be understood as a medium capable of generating formal and conceptual
inquiry independently of practical utility.
In Mexico, this transformation acquired distinctive
characteristics because of the country's extensive pottery traditions.
Modernization did not necessarily imply abandoning the past; in many cases,
historical knowledge became the starting point for new investigations.
Alberto Díaz de Cossío's Taller Experimental de Cerámica in
Coyoacán exemplifies this orientation. Research into clay bodies, glazes, and
firing atmospheres transformed technical procedures into explicit subjects of
study.
The status of ceramic material consequently changed. Objects
were no longer evaluated solely according to their usefulness or the
craftsmanship involved in their production, but also according to their
capacity to generate formal, conceptual, and perceptual questions.
Part 10. Revisiting Historical Techniques
The modernization of Mexican ceramics coexisted with
initiatives aimed at recovering historical techniques. The work of Gorky
González and Javier Hernández Capelo in Guanajuato exemplifies the relationship
between conservation and innovation.
González conducted research into historical maiolica
production in several Mexican regions and subsequently expanded his technical
training in Japan. His work in Guanajuato focused on recovering Bajío pottery
practices and adapting them to contemporary objects.
In 1979, Javier Hernández Capelo founded the Taller de
Alfarería Mayólica de Guanajuato, where he developed utilitarian objects,
murals, and sculptures.
The recovery of these techniques should not be understood
simply as historical reproduction. Updating a tradition involves selecting
procedures, modifying proportions, experimenting with firing conditions, and
adapting objects to new contexts of use.
From a technological perspective, this process demonstrates
that tradition and innovation are not necessarily opposites. A technique can
remain relevant precisely because it can respond to conditions different from
those that shaped its original development.
Part 11. African Contributions to Mexican Ceramic Culture
Understanding Mexican ceramic culture also requires
consideration of the influence of African populations brought to New Spain
during the colonial period.
The African presence resulted from processes of enslavement
and forced displacement involving populations from different regions of West
and Central Africa. These groups brought knowledge and cultural systems that
subsequently became part of New Spanish and Mexican society.
For much of traditional historiography, these contributions
received less attention than European or Indigenous influences. Since the late
twentieth century, research has increasingly recognized this dimension through
the concept of the “third root.”
The identification of visual repertoires potentially
associated with African traditions challenges the automatic classification of
non-European production as Indigenous. This issue is particularly relevant to
material culture, where forms and motifs can circulate among communities and
acquire new meanings.
Ceramics therefore provide a valuable field for examining
the complexity of cultural interaction and the ways in which different material
traditions became integrated within colonial and postcolonial Mexico.
Part 12. Authorship, Gender, and the Changing Status of Craft
The status of popular production changed substantially
during the first decades of the twentieth century. The 1921 exhibition Las
artes visuales en México, coordinated by Gerardo Murillo, known as Dr. Atl,
contributed to renewed interest among artists and intellectuals in cultural
expressions produced outside academic art institutions.
Artists including Jorge Enciso, Roberto Montenegro, Diego
Rivera, and Miguel Covarrubias participated in collecting and reassessing
Indigenous and popular objects.
This process coincided with post-Revolutionary nationalism.
Popular arts became instruments for expressing collective identity, although
their institutional incorporation also introduced new systems of classification
and hierarchy.
The collections assembled by Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo
provide an example of this transformation. Their interest in Indigenous and
popular objects contributed to their inclusion within spaces associated with
art collecting, conservation, and exhibition.
Questions of authorship become particularly relevant when
considering the role of women. Figures such as Rosa Real Mateo de Nieto and
Teodora Blanco demonstrate that pottery cannot be understood solely through
categories of region or style. The trajectories of individual makers and the
transmission of technical knowledge within families and communities are equally
significant.
Recognizing authorship changes the interpretation of an
object. It ceases to be viewed exclusively as a representative product of a
tradition and can instead be studied as the outcome of an individual practice
involving specific technical and formal decisions.
Part 13. Materiality in Contemporary Mexican
Ceramics
In contemporary ceramic production, materiality has acquired
an increasingly explicit role in artistic discourse.
Surface irregularities, cracks, deformation during drying,
and variations produced during firing may be deliberately incorporated into the
finished work. The process is no longer merely a sequence of operations
intended to produce a predetermined result; it becomes part of the material
content of the object.
This characteristic has significant technical implications.
Ceramic materials are particularly sensitive to variables that cannot always be
fully controlled. Clay shrinkage, moisture distribution, glaze composition,
heating and cooling rates, and kiln atmosphere can all alter the final result.
The maker therefore operates within a system of partial
control. Experimentation involves not only controlling variables but also
understanding their interactions and the range of outcomes they can produce.
Contemporary Mexican ceramics exploit this condition through
works that extend beyond the traditional vessel and move toward installation,
furniture, sculpture, and architectural applications.
14. Illustrated Ceramics and the Expansion of the Utilitarian Object
Illustrated ceramics provide another example of the medium's
expansion. In this practice, drawing becomes integrated with everyday objects
and transforms their surfaces into narrative spaces.
Pigments, slips, glazes, and transfer techniques may all be
employed. When imagery is drawn directly onto the ceramic surface, the final
result depends both on graphic execution and on the material transformations
produced during firing.
The integration of drawing and volume changes the experience
of the object. A cup or plate becomes more than a decorated container; it
functions as a narrative surface embedded in everyday practices.
This practice also demonstrates the permeability of
contemporary disciplines. Visual artists, illustrators, and designers
increasingly use ceramics as a medium for translating languages originally
developed in two-dimensional formats into three-dimensional objects.
Utility remains present, but it is no longer the sole
criterion through which the object is defined.
Part 15. Discussion: Continuity and Transformation
in Material Culture
The historical trajectory examined here reveals a recurring
characteristic of Mexican ceramics: technological transformations rarely
eliminate earlier systems completely. New techniques frequently interact with
established knowledge and produce hybrid configurations.
European glazing did not immediately replace Indigenous
practices; Asian porcelain did not eliminate local production; industrial
manufacturing coexisted with artisanal workshops; and high-temperature ceramics
did not displace traditional pottery.
This coexistence challenges a strictly evolutionary
interpretation of technology in which each innovation necessarily replaces its
predecessor. Ceramic history instead suggests a more complex pattern in which
different technical systems coexist because they respond to distinct needs,
markets, and cultural values.
Function also changes over time. An object may begin as a
domestic utensil, become a tourist commodity, and eventually enter a museum
collection. Its material composition may remain relatively stable while the
social relationships determining its meaning change substantially.
The vessel provides a concise illustration of this process.
Its functional structure remains recognizable over millennia, while its
dimensions, surfaces, technologies, and contexts of use change continuously.
Ceramics can therefore be understood as a particularly
effective medium for examining long-term cultural processes. Objects preserve
evidence of technical and social transformations that may otherwise be
difficult to reconstruct.
Conclusions
The history of ceramics in Mexico demonstrates a sustained
relationship among material, technology, function, and culture. From Indigenous
traditions to contemporary practices, clay has served both as a medium for
technical knowledge and as a vehicle for expressing social transformations.
Its development does not follow a linear sequence of
technological replacements. Indigenous techniques, European procedures, Asian
and African influences, industrial manufacturing, and contemporary
experimentation overlap and generate new configurations.
Transpacific trade demonstrated at an early stage the
capacity of ceramics to transport not only commodities but also aesthetic
preferences and technical knowledge. Industrialization changed production
scales and relationships between objects and consumers. Cultural nationalism
transformed perceptions of craft and contributed to the conversion of regional
productions into symbols of national identity. High-temperature technology
expanded the material possibilities of ceramics and contributed to their
consolidation as an autonomous artistic language.
Contemporary production continues to extend these
boundaries. A ceramic object may retain a domestic function, become a
sculptural work, form part of an installation, or operate as a surface for
illustration. These possibilities do not erase its material history; they
incorporate it.
The persistence of clay can therefore be attributed, in
part, to its capacity for adaptation. Its cultural relevance does not depend
solely on the antiquity of its techniques or the preservation of specific
forms, but on the possibility of reinterpreting them under changing social,
economic, technological, and aesthetic conditions.
Ultimately, Barro y cerámica en México: Poéticas de lo
utilitario demonstrates that ceramics constitute far more than an artisanal
or artistic category. They form a material system in which technical knowledge,
labor, exchange, memory, and design converge. Earth transformed through water
and fire acquires new physical properties while retaining evidence of the
decisions of its makers and the historical contexts through which objects
circulate.
The persistence of ceramics therefore lies not in the
preservation of immutable forms, but in their capacity to transform while
maintaining an essential relationship among material, function, and human
experience.
